some life lessons

Let's listen to Navy Seal Admiral William H. McRaven graduation speech to the graduates of the 2014 class of UT. It is worth hearing, despite McRaven's statement that he has no memory of the commencement speech of his own graduation...

The speech starts with a simple enough assertion. If you make a change in the lives of 10 people, a class of 8,000 can change the entire population world in 4 generations...

Where to start ? with the simple things. With McRaven's life lessons from his basic SEAL training:
  • Nake your bed every morning. it is the first task completed. a little pride. and a little reinforcement that the little things matter. and if it was a bad day - you come home to a made bed.
  • if you need to paddle a boat in a storming sea, you can't do it alone. you can't change the world alone. you need friends, family, and guidance.
  • seal training taught a lesson - it isn't about size but about will. measure a person by the size of his heart. not by the size of his flippers.
  • in training, there was the sugar cookie drill. trainers inspected uniforms. if they were imperfect, you were sent to dip in the sea and roll in the sand. hence the name of the drill. the lesson - sometimes, however hard you try, you will end up as a sugar cookie. it is just the way life is sometimes. if you want to change the world, get over it - and keep moving forward.
  • everyday had physical challenges. those who failed got to be on the "circus list" - an extra two hours of training. you really didn't want to be on the least. but everyone happened there during training. a funny thing happened to those who kept appearing in the list - they got stronger and stronger. physically and mentally. the lesson - you will fail. at times you will be tested to the core. but if you want to change the world - don't be afraid from the circuses.
I intentionally do not write about the more interesting lessons -
  •  about plunging a high rope head first,
  • about sharks,
  • about swimming under the darkest parts of ships,
  • about the mud sloughs of tijuana and the power of a song
  • about ringing a bell
But will hint that the summary of the speech can be described in the following suggestions:
  • start each day with a mission completed
  • find someone to help you through life
  • respect everyone
  • know that life is not fair and you will fail often
  • take some risks
  • step up when the time are toughest
  • fae up the bullies
  • lift up the down-trodden
  • never ever give up

If you do these things - suggests Admiral McRaven - the next generation and the one that follows will live in a better world.

Isn't it worth giving a try ?
